Volunteering in Ritsona by Rayan Chafshen
Hello, my name is Rayan, I am 20 years old, and I am a Kurd from Simel, Kurdistan. I have been in Greece for 8 months, and have been living in Ritsona camp ever since I arrived. Since coming to the camp, I have had many great memories gained through volunteering, and I would like to share my experiences as a volunteer in the Ritsona camp.
When I arrived in Ritsona camp for the first time, some people told me many good things about Lighthouse Relief – the activities they do, how they provide support and lessons for languages such as German, English, and French. When I came to Lighthouse for the first time, I saw the volunteers who were working in the Youth Engagement Space (YES) and the Child Friendly Space (CFS) and loved the connection between themselves and the camp residents; everyone was accepting, smiling and laughing.
After experiencing this connection, I really wanted to be a part of it and decided to sign up and be a Resident Volunteer (RV) with Lighthouse. Through volunteering, I have met and worked with many different people from all over the world, and I have learned so much at the same time.
For example, in Kurdistan, I taught myself how to speak and read/write English, but when I left, I had to leave the films and music I owned behind – these were my English “teachers”. Without these, I totally forgot how to speak English but with the help of the volunteers I have met, I have improved my English through speaking with them and asking them questions about “How do you say…?” and everything else!
Seeing Lighthouse in Ritsona, I said to myself “This is my chance to use and improve my English – I have learned so much, so I don’t want to forget everything”. I spoke to the former youth space manager (Tamara), and she offered me the chance to be a Resident Volunteer (RV). When she told me yes, I thought “I have to take this chance – I will treat this like I am working for one of the biggest organisations in the world; I can use my talent that I have been hiding for a very long time, and use it to help other people”.
When I put the Lighthouse Relief jacket on for the first time, I felt so proud of myself and proud to be working for an organisation like Lighthouse. They have taught me so much and I appreciate everything they have done for me, and for other people like me who have had to leave their country.
After 4 months of volunteering with Lighthouse Relief, I began volunteering with another organisation based in the Ritsona camp called CCS.
Here, I used my language skills and was a translator for English, Kurdish, and Arabic. I was translating for all volunteers with CCS – they were all from America! Every time I spoke to the American volunteers, we spoke in English – not Arabic or Kurdish, and this is why I feel so confident speaking in English now. The American volunteers didn’t just teach me English; they also taught me Spanish. In return, I teach them Kurdish and Arabic.
Being a translator is a very busy job! I work in 3 different places – the laundrette, the corner shop in the camp, and the warehouse in the camp where all of the donated supplies from all over the world are delivered, sorted, stored and distributed to the camp residents.
In the laundrette, it was so hot! I used to run around and was always busy, but it was great because the staff at CCS were always so kind and grateful for the work I was doing. It was so good to feel so appreciated by the residents in the camp and by the staff at CCS.
CCS volunteers and I were able to hang out outside of the organisation – we went to the beach, played billiards, went bowling, and came to Lighthouse and used the Youth Engagement Space (YES) inside the camp.
In the same way as with Lighthouse Relief, I am so grateful for the help I have been given by CCS, and really appreciate their support.
Arriving in Ritsona camp, I was so shy and was afraid to speak English with anyone because I was unsure that the things I wanted to say would be correct. Now I have volunteered with Lighthouse and CCS, I am much more confident in myself, and my English has never been better.
It was my dream to leave Kurdistan, so when I left, I was so happy. It is a dream come true – I can use my language skills and speak English every day! When I leave Greece, I hope to return to Ritsona and visit both Lighthouse and CCS as they have helped me with so much, not just learning English, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities they have given me.

مرحباً، أنا ريّان و أنا في العشرين من عمري من كردستان من منطقة سيميل. لقد كنت في اليونان لمدة ٨ أشهر و عشت في ريتسونا منذ أن وصلت. منذ مجيئي للمخيم ، لقد صنعت العديد من الذكريات العظيمة بالتطوع وأود أن أشارككم تجربتي كمتطوع في ريتسونا.
عندما وصلت إلى ريتسونا للمرة الأولى ، بعض الناس أخبروني أشياء جيدة كثيرة عن لايت هاوس.أخبروني عن الأنشطة التي يقومون بها ، وكيف يقدمون الدعم والدروس للغات مثل الألمانية والانجليزية والفرنسية. عندما جئت إلى لايت هاوس لأول مرة، رأيت المتطوعين الذين يعملون في YES مع الشباب و فيCFS مع
الأطفال و أحببت الصلة بينهم وبين سكان المخيم.الجميع كان متقبل ويبتسم ويضحك
بعد تجربة هذا الاحساس ، أردت حقا أن أكون جزءا منه وقررت أن أسجل وأكون متطوعاً مقيماً (RV) مع لايت هاوس. ومن خلال التطوع ، التقيت وعملت مع العديد من الأشخاص المختلفين من جميع أنحاء العالم ، وتعلمت الكثير في نفس الوقت. مثلاً، في كردستان، علّمت نفسي كيف أتحدث و أقرأ وأكتب اللغة الإنجليزية، ولكن عندما غادرت كان علي أن أترك أفلامي و موسيقتي الذي كانوا مثل معلمي الإنجليزي. بدونهم، نسيت تماماً كيف أتحدث الإنجليزية ولكن بمساعدة المتطوعين الذين قابلتهم ، قمت بتحسين لغتي الإنجليزية من خلال التحدث معهم وطرح الأسئلة عليهم مثل ”كيف تقول…؟“ وكل شيء آخر!
قلت لنفسي عندما رأيت لايت هاوس في ريتسونا أن هذه هي فرصتي لاستخدام وتحسين لغتي الإنجليزية، لقد تعلمت الكثير ، لذلك أنا لا أريد أن أنسى كل شيء.فذهبت لأتحدث مع ل مديرة فضاء الشباب السابقة تمارا وعرضت عليّ الفرصة لأكون متطوعا مقيما .(RV) عندما قالت لي نعم ، فكرت "يجب أن أغتنم هذه الفرصة - سأعالج هذا وكأنني أعمل لواحدة من أكبر المنظمات في العالم ؛ ويمكنني أن أستخدم موهبتي التي كنت أخفيها لفترة طويلة جدا، وأستخدمها لمساعدة الآخرين“
عندما وضعت سترة اللايت هاوس للمرة الأولى، شعرت بالفخر جدا من نفسي وفخور أن يكون أعمل لتلك المنظمة. لقد علموني الكثير، وأنا أقدّر كل ما فعلوه من أجلي ومن أجل أشخاص آخرين مثلي الذين اضطروا لمغادرة بلادهم
بعد ٤ أشهر من العمل التطوعي مع لايت هاوس ، بدأت العمل التطوعي مع منظمة أخرى مقرها في ريتسونا تسمى .CCS هنا، استخدمت مهاراتي اللغوية وكنت مترجماً للإنجليزية والكردية والعربية. لقد كنت أترجم لكل المتطوعين مع CCS-هم كانوا جميعا من أمريكا!
وفي كل مرة أتحدث فيها إلى المتطوعين الأمريكيين ، نتكلم باللغة الانكليزية وليس بالعربية أو الكردية، ولهذا أشعر الآن بالثّقة الشديدة في التحدث باللغة الانكليزية. المتطوعون الأمريكيون لم يعلموني الإنجليزية فقط، بل علّموني الإسبانية أيضاً و أعلمهم أنا الكردية و العربية
أن تكون مترجماً هو عمل مشغول جداً! أنا أعمل في ٣ أماكن مختلفة – غرفة غسيل الملابس، ركن المحل في المخيم، و المستودع في المخيم حيث كل الإمدادات المتبرعة من جميع أنحاء العالم يتم تسليمها وفرزها وتخزينها وتوزيعها على سكان المخيم. المغسلة حارة جدا!
كنت أركض في الأرجاء وكنت مشغول دائما لكن كان أمر رائعاً لأن موظفي CCSكانوا دائماً لطفاء وممتنين للعمل الذي كنت أقوم به. وكان من الجيد جداً أن أشعر بالتقدير الشديد من قبل المقيمين في المخيم ومن قبل الموظفين في .CCS
كنّا أنا ومتطوعي CCS قادرين على الإلتقاء خارج المنظمة، ذهبنا إلى الشّاطئ ، لعبنا البلياردو ذهبنا للعب البولينغ، و ذهبنا الى لايت هاوس و منطقة الشباب في المخيّم.
بنفس الطريقة مع لايت هاوس، أنا ممتن جداً للمساعدة التي قدمناها من قبلCCS ، وأقدر حقاً دعمهم.
عندما وصلت إلى مخيم ريتسونا، كنت خجول جداً وخائف من التحدث بالإنجليزية مع أي أحد لأنني كنت غير متأكد أن الأشياء التي أردت قولها ستكون صحيحة. الآن تطوعت مع لايت هاوس و CCS، و لديّ أكثر ثقة في نفسي، ولغتي الإنجليزية لم تكن أفضل.
لقد كان حلمي أن أترك كردستان، لذا عندما غادرت، كنت سعيدة جداً. إنه حلم تحقق. يمكنني أن أستخدم مهاراتي اللغوية وأتكلم الإنجليزية كل يوم.
عندما أغادر اليونان ، آمل أن أعود إلى ريتسونا وأزور لايت هاوس و CCS لأنهم ساعدوني كثيراً، ليس فقط في تعلّم اللغة الإنجليزية بل أشياء اخرى كثيرة، وسأكون دائماً شاكراً للفرص التي منحوني إياها.
