Sahmiran (Shahmaran/ Sahmeran) The Queen of the Serpents By Hesen Mihemed

This mythological story is considered to be a Kurdish legend (originating in Mesopotamia) but there are many versions in different areas.

The Sahmiran has become symbolic of a wise, intelligent woman and traditionally people hang portraits of her in young girls’ bedrooms. I love the colourful imagery of Sahmeran and I also love the symbolism of the story. Her heart was pure.

The Story:

Sahmeran means “Queen of the Meran”. The Meran were a group of serpent, god-like creatures who lived in caves under the seventh layer of the Earth. They were wise and peaceful beings who valued friendship and love. Sahmeran was very beautiful with the torso of a woman and the tail of a serpent.

A young man from a poor family, Tahmasp, discovered the serpents’ cave when he was travelling and followed a light he saw emanating from underground. He fell in love with Sahmeran’s great wisdom. She told him many stories about the world and humanity. She also told him that the only reason he was able to find her was because of his pure heart and his ability to see the light of the other world beyond the physical realm.

But when Tahmasp returns to his home to visit his family he is seen to have snake scales on his body and is tortured by the Vizier (a high official of the land) who wants to eat the meat of Shahmaran, to acquire her youth and wisdom. Tahmasp is forced to reveal the location of the Merans’ cave under threat that his family and loved ones will be killed.

When Sahmeran is captured she says “Whoever tears off a bit of flesh from my tail and eats it will be endowed with all the secrets of the world. But whoever takes a bit of flesh from my head and eats it will die instantly.” The Vizier immediately kills her and eats the flesh from her tail. Tahmasp, horrified and wishing to die, eats the flesh from Sahmeran’s head. But Sahmeran had said this to trick the Vizier. He dies immediately and Tahmasp, instead, becomes endowed with her great wisdom.

The story has many beautiful messages. Tahmasp loved Sahmeran and the Meran because he can see their beauty even though they are snakes. Sahmeran, an intelligent, peaceful, compassionate creature beyond our human understanding, even in death, finds a way to protect the one she loves.

القصة

تعني شاهميران "ملكة الميران". كان الميران مجموعة من المخلوقات الشبيهة بالأفعى التي

تعيش في كهوف تحت الطبقة السابعة من الأرض. كانت كائنات حكيمة وسلمية تقدر الصداقة

والمحبة. كانت الشاهميران جميلة للغاية لديها جسد المرأة من أعلى وذيل الثعبان

عن العالم المادي

لكن عندما يعود طهماسب إلى منزله لزيارة أسرته ، يُرى أن لديه حرشفة ثعابين على جسده

ويتعرض للتعذيب على يد الوزير (أحد كبار المسؤولين في الأرض) الذي يريد أكل لحم

شاهميران ، لإكتساب شبابها وحكمتها. . يضطر طهماسب إلى الكشف عن موقع كهف الميران

تحت التهديد بقتل عائلته وأحبائه

عندما يتم القبض على شاهميران تقول: "من يقطع قليلاً من لحم ذيلي ويأكله فسيحظى بكل

أسرار العالم. لكن كل من يأكل قليلاً من لحم رأسي فإنه سيموت على الفور" الوزير يقتلها

على الفور ويأكل اللحم من ذيلها بينما يأكل طهماسب الذي يرغب في الموت اللحم من ذيلها

أيضاً. لكن شاهميران قالت هذا لخداع الوزير الذي مات على الفور وأصبح طهماسب لديه

حكمتها العظيمة

القصة لديها العديد من الرسائل الجميلة. أحب طهماسب شاهميران والميران لأنه إستطاع أن

يرى جمالهن على الرغم من كونهن أفاعي. شاهميران هي مخلوق ذكي وهادئ وعطوف

يتجاوز تفهمنا البشري حيث تجد طريقة لحماية الشخص الذي تحبه حتى في الموت
