Zainab and Sara
Many of the young people in Ritsona camp have had their education disrupted due to conflict. For others, their only experience of formal education has been since they reached Greece. Zainab and Sara* are regulars in the YES. They wanted to contribute to the journal but cannot read and write. So, they sat down with Tamara, the YES Manager, and spoke to her about their experiences in Ritsona camp and Greece and their hopes for the future. Here is what they had to say!
Zainab: My name is Zainab and I live in Ritsona refugee camp. I’m here with my friend Sara, she lives in Ritsona too. We’re both Arab and we’re both 12 years old. We like Greece and we’d like to be part of this country and to help people in need. I hope that when I get older I will be able to do a job that helps people, I don’t really know what but I just want to help people and do good things. I don’t want the world to look at me and think that I’m a bad person.
Everyone at Lighthouse - Tamara, Sara and everyone else here - help us a lot. They’re very nice to us and we’re nice to them.
Sara: We help them too. We sometimes help tidy up and if there are problems we tell people at Lighthouse. Tamara and Valentina are in charge here and they help us and we respect them a lot because they also respect us.
Zainab: We like coming to Lighthouse for our dance classes but really we like everything they do here. They do a lot of things at Lighthouse. We like to come here and take part in all the activities and to help people. We go to school here in Greece and the teachers are nice to us but sometimes people don’t like us because we are Arab. They think that Arabs are ugly or bad people. But we like them and respect them.
Sara: Sometimes people make fun of girls that wear headscarves. It makes the girls sad and they feel uncomfortable wearing them.
Zainab: I like Greek people for the most part though!
Sara: Yes…many of them work here in the camp and help us. I would like to do that. When I grow up I would like to be a doctor and to go to school and to help people. I’d like to help my mum when she gets older too.
Zainab: Yes, I would like to help people too. Especially people who really need it, or even if they don’t have a big need for it. I would love to be a doctor who could just work for free so that we can help everyone.

زينب: اسمي زينب وأنا أعيش في مخيم اللاجئين في رتسونا. أنا هنا مع صديقي سارة ، تعيش في ريتسونا أيضًا. نحن عربيان وكلانا 12 عامًا. نحب اليونان ونود أن نكون جزءًا من هذا البلد ولمساعدة المحتاجين. آمل أنه عندما نكبر سنكون قادرين على القيام بعمل يساعد الناس ، أنا لا أعرف حقا ما ولكني أريد فقط مساعدة الناس وتفعل أشياء جيدة. لا أريد أن ينظر العالم إليّ وأن يظنونني شخص سيء.
الجميع في "لايت هاوس ريليف" وتمارا وسارة والجميع هنا يساعدنا كثيرا. إنهم لطفاء جدًا لنا ونحن لطيفون معهم.
سارة: نساعدهم أيضًا ، ونساعد أحيانًا في ترتيب الأمور ، وإذا كانت هناك مشكلات ، فإننا نقول للناس في"لايت هاوس ريليف". تمارا وفالنتينا هما المسؤولتان هنا ويساعداننا ونحن نحترمهما كثيرًا لأنهما كما نحترمنا.
زينب: نحب أن نأتي إلى "لايت هاوس ريليف" لدروس الرقص لدينا ، لكننا بالفعل نحب كل ما يفعلونه هنا. يفعلون الكثير من الأشياء في"لايت هاوس". نود المجيء إلى هنا والمشاركة في جميع الأنشطة ومساعدة الناس. نذهب إلى المدرسة هنا في اليونان والمعلمون لطيفون لنا لكن في بعض الأحيان لا يحبنا الناس لأننا عرب. يعتقدون أن العرب قبيحون أو سيئون. لكننا نحبهم ونحترمهم.
سارة: أحيانًا يسخر الناس من الفتيات اللواتي يرتدين غطاء الرأس. يجعل الفتيات حزينات ويشعرن بعدم الارتياح لارتدائهن.
زينب: أنا أحب الشعب اليوناني على الرغم من معظم!
سارة: نعم ... كثير منهم يعملون هنا في مخيم ريتسونا ويساعدونا. وأود أن نفعل ذلك. عندما أكبر ، أرغب في أن أكون طبيباً وأن أذهب إلى المدرسة وأن أساعد الناس. أود أن أساعد أمي عندما تتقدم في السن أيضًا.
زينب: نعم ، أود مساعدة الناس أيضًا. خاصة الأشخاص الذين يحتاجون إليها حقًا ، أو حتى إذا لم تكن لديهم حاجة كبيرة إليها. أحب أن أكون طبيبًا يمكنه العمل مجانًا حتى نتمكن من مساعدة الجميع.
