Art As A Window To the Soul

The following is a preview of the Ritsona Kingdom Journal, a youth-run publication developed by young people at Ritsona refugee camp in mainland Greece. The full publication can be viewed here. All views are their own.

In Ritsona, unexpected whispers of colour on caravan walls and tucked away in notebooks are a strong reminder of the resilience of this community. It’s absolutely undeniable that young residents have been through unimaginable challenges – and will face many ahead – but through art, they’re able to find comfort and confidence.

At Lighthouse Relief’s Youth Engagement Space (YES), participants range from experienced young artists working to refine their craft to teenagers that constantly surprise themselves with what they’re able to create. Either way, the amazing work they produce is a testament to their emotional strength and vibrancy.

Paint, ink and thread might never be able to solve the many trying tests to come, but their presence in camp are a sure sign of this group’s relentless will to go on.
