"Rain in the Cathedral"
Stocks lap like ocean tides,
People are shouting in the streets
The earth shakes, the pavement cracks
Blood traces our knees
⠀
The world collapses and rebuilds itself
Like a slowly pumping heart
Heaven owes us no favors
When our procedures run out
⠀
Singing from the cathedral
Drifts through my window
While we are drinking and drinking
And outrunning storms
⠀
Maybe we could be better at it all;
But it's the same difference
Our hearts, like laws
Were made to be broken
⠀
Thunder splits the sky open
And I wonder-
How quickly the soft rain turns violent
And
How quickly I start to care
About anything at all
⠀
(One day the cathedral will be empty
One day the earth will be empty, too
I wonder when we'll say goodbye
I wonder when our voices will sing
for the final time)
