The Definition of You

The Definition of You

Every night as darkness falls, and the world falls asleep

I sit in the light of the peeking moon

And remind myself in a soft whisper

This is all you are

A constellation of mistakes and a bouquet of flaws,

Too weak to be

Anything but a lost cause.

But today,

Someone I love told me,

That a person is more than the mistakes they make,

The horrors they face and the way they look.

That to find a silver lining is to find hope

And to find hope is to find the key to the world.

So tonight as darkness falls, and the world falls asleep

I sit in the light of the peeking moon,

And in a soft whisper, tell myself for the very first time,

Yes,

Your stretch marks and fat defines you,

But so does the fact that you are beautiful inside-out,

In the eyes of the ones you love

And soon will be in yours too.

Yes,

Your nightmares and fear define you, for they are a part of who you are,

But so does the fact that you fight back,

And go back to sleep every night,

Knowing, that a battle awaits.

And soon the war will come to an end, as you come to a truce with your mind.

Yes,

Your flaws and mistakes, every glitch and break,

Every tear and scream, every bad day and every worse night,

Are things that define you,

But so does every smile and laugh and passion,

Every show of strength and talent.

Every morning you wake up to, every night you sleep,

Every day you live,

And every beautiful dream you see for yourself.

Every break down, as well as every time you’ve wiped your tears away.

Every time you’ve held your head up high,

And every time you’ve cried with your face in your palms.

The things that push you down define you, but so does your ability to get back up.

Your struggles define you, but so does your fight.

The small things make you who you are,

The people you love, the games you like,

The food you eat, the jokes you crack,

The clothes you wear, and the music you blast.

And all of these together

The big and the small,

The good and the bad,

The pretty and the pale,

The victories and the losses,

The weaknesses and the strengths,

Everything that went right, and everything that went wrong,

Make, a very beautiful you.
